Pictorial works

I am currently working with Vietnamese photographer, Can Tran Thi, on an extensive collection of photographs of Vietnam. Part of the objective is comparing how we both record what we see. With her local knowledge and local interests, Can might be expected to see and shoot differently to how I, as a foreigner sees the country. This project looks at what those difference might be and why.

Two examples of Can's photographs taken in the mountains north of Ha Noi.

Playing in the Sand is a collection of photographs I shot in two days at the sand dunes in Vietnam, located at Mui Ne and Bao Trang near Phan Thiet (about 4 hours drive east of Ho Chi Minh City).

The book includes the 'formal' landscape photographs of the sand dunes - iconic subject matter for photographers - as well as shots of the people and activties around me to provide some context to the location.

I will never forget the feel of my feet in the shifting sands nor the constant sand-blasting on my legs. Changing lenses under these conditions was quite a challenge!
