Book publication

For those of you involved with the Fathers and Sons or the Mothers and Daughters projects, I have a few questions I’d like to ask. Your comments may be added anonymously to the book I am compiling. I would like to know:

(1) what the process of being photographed meant to you and

(2) what the portrait means to you now (eg, how you get some enjoyment from it).

It would be good to hear from both parents and children, and even from spouses as observers. I am also keen to hear any other responses to the images and the process you may have. Just email your response to me as soon as you can.

Website and Galleries update

My website has recently been totally overhauled to accomodate more information including articles, reviews, and much more. I try to keep it simple and easy to read. Your feedback is always welcome.

I now use Smugmug for most photo-galleries. It is easy to access and reasonably user-friendly for my client portraits as well as my landscape and other work.

Recently I have been uploading images for previewing. This has worked particularly well for busy clients who enjoy making a short-list before coming in to order. It also streamlines the workflow as only one person need come in and order (and often without the kids).

Clients have aready given the big thumbs-up for this online previewing.

Over time I may upload more files from archived portrait session so you can review and refer them to friends and family if you choose. All images are password protected so viewing is restricted. If you would like yours online please let me know.

Photography tutoring

Due to constant demand from clients with these new-fangled complex digital cameras, I have developed a tutoring program to help you understand how to use your camera and to get some decent shots from it.

A series of one-day workshop groups will be very hands-on to help you get up and running quickly. Workshop places will be strictly limited to ensure you get maximum one-to-one assistance.

A short theoretical component will be included to get your head around some of the confusing concepts – shutter speed, aperture, lighting, lenses, etc. This will be one evening the week before the workshop.

The cost starts from just $190 and will include the whole day shooting with lunch included (that’s the best bit!). We will also have some time to review your work on the day.

Framing issues

Accepted practice in framing prints has always been to suspend them behind a mat. I have found a few cases in which they get a bit wrinkly so for some time I have been dry-mounting them instead. As it happens I am now too busy to frame much myself and so I use my photo-lab in Melbourne to do it all for me (which works out to be a bit quicker anyway!).

If you have a wrinkly portrait please let me know and I can fix it for you. Email me.

Selling like hot-cakes now is a superb product I get from my lab. The image is printed and sealed under acrylic/perpsex. This process has many great benefits to it:

  1. a great modern look to it – a floating frameless look;
  2. the acrylic offers more UV protection than glass;
  3. images look sharper and more vibrant than under glass;
  4. will not shatter like glass – so it’s safer and easy to travel with;
  5. no chance of wrinkling!

Latest project: Just the 2 of Us

Following the Fathers and Sons or the Mothers and Daughters projects, I am looking at pairs of people this year. The love and connection are great to capture when just two people involved. So this is an opportunity for everyone to participate, especially those who missed out with the previous projects.

This is perfect for fathers and daughters, mothers and sons, siblings, grandparents and grandchildren, partners, lover and spouses. Part of the fascination will be seeing the range and combinations everyone comes up with.

Conditions are the same as all projects: free portrait sitting PLUS a discounted print.

More about this new project here.

Studio and Corporate portraiture

While I am well know for my family portraiture, less people are aware that I also shoot corporate work too. I can come to your business location or you can come to my studio here. I have a new studio that is superb for this kind of photography.

Photography for Life

To help you keep your family portraits a little more up to date all portrait sittings are FREE for ‘existing clients’. If I have photographed you once you will never have to pay the portrait sitting fee.

From my own experience I see my kids (and yours) change so quickly. We think we will remember the wonderful moments of their lives but, in truth, we forget easily how they looked and what their personalities were like. A portrait photograph is the perfect way to retain these moments and to keep them close forever.

So often I hear kids saying how they too would like to remember how we look and to own some decent portraits of us. So we have some responsibility to get ourselves photographed too, even if we are camera-shy.

There are many ways to be photographed. I have included a visual portrait guide here.
