1. Creative Meeting

The first step towards getting the best portraiture is the Creative Meeting. This helps us prepare for the shoot and helps us get to know each other. We will discuss the sort of portraiture you prefer, what you might wear, where you might hang your portrait and the type of framing an album you might select.

2. The Shoot

The thought of being photographed excites and terrifies many people. I guess we are all a bit frightened of how the camera will record us. I find, however, when we are enjoying ourselves or interacting with someone we love we can’t help but look happy. This enjoyment is what I like to capture with the camera ...and if that doesn't work I still have a few tricks. :)

My approach to photographing people comes as much from my film-making experience as my still-photography. I generally place you in some location/setting that looks great and suits you, then have you engaged in what you like doing or interacting with someone close to you.

A shoot will generally require somewhere between 30 minutes and up to 2 hours. Every situation is different and so it is impossible to generalise. Every shoot and work-flow is customised to you and your needs.

Shoot cost: location $298 studio $198.

3. Viewing

After some general image-enhancements a selection of the best shots will be available for viewing in a few days. For particularly extensive shoots I sometimes upload images for previewingonline . This allows busy people (that’s everyone) and children to have some input.

To help you concentrate and make the right decision I discourage children coming along to these viewing sessions – especially small children.

My work is quite different to what most people are accustomed to and everyone wants more than they could possibly have imagined. As a result, viewings often take an hour or more and sometimes requires a second viewing before finalising. Making the right decision maximises your enjoyment and extends the lifetime of your fabulous family heirlooms.

A good photographic portrait should be more that just a simple record of what we look like. A good photographic portrait should catch the essence of who we really are and what is special about us. Photography can achieve this in a way no other medium can. A good photographic portrait becomes 'artistic' when it has all these qualities as well as being both evocative and enduring. This is the portrait photographer's challenge.
